Eczema: How to Reduce the Itch-Scratch Response Eczema, dry, itchy and sensitive skin, hives and heat rash.

Are your kids frequently bothered by these skin conditions? Well, according to research, these are some of the most common skin conditions affecting children around the world as well as here, in our hot tropical climate. As parents, we tend to err on the side of caution when choosing the right treatment for our children’s delicate skin —leaning towards more natural, holistic and organic treatments whenever possible. More importantly, these treatments have to work effectively in reducing the itch-scratch response and provide sufficient hydration without interfering too much with their day to day activities. The first order of business would be to correctly identify and diagnose the skin condition before we can ascertain the right treatment and management for that particular skin condition. Eczema, for instance, is one of the most challenging skin conditions there is. Challenging why? It is a complex condition caused by a combination of factors that are often beyond the patient’s control and some of its triggers are often hard to identify. And because of this, it is difficult to treat and cure eczema completely. However, there are several ways in which eczema can be better managed to prevent recurring flare ups as well as some useful products that has been proven effective in providing the much needed relief. Read on to find out more.

What is Eczema?

Derived from a Greek word that means “to boil over”, Eczema is a medical condition in which patches of skin surface becomes inflamed, dry, itchy, appears cracked and sometimes results in the formation of blisters. It is not a skin allergy as is commonly believed. Rather, it is a recurring skin irritation as a result of an exposure to a variety of triggers that are unique to each individual. The most common type of eczema in children is atopic eczema, which is the result of unfavourable conditions within the body. Eczema is considered a chronic illness that ranges from mild to extremely severe and if not treated and managed properly, could affect a child’s quality of life.

What causes Eczema?

The presence of moisture is very crucial to the wellbeing of our skin and in order for it to be healthy, the skin has to possess the right amount of moisture. So, what happens during a flare up? When a person with sensitive skin is exposed to a trigger, the protective barrier that locks in moisture for the skin starts to break down, and this leaves the skin open and vulnerable, allowing germs, allergens and impurities to enter — leading to a flare up. Eczema is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. If a family member or a relative has eczema, then it follows that a child related to this family member may contract eczema at some point. Certain environmental factors have been known to contribute to eczema.

Treatment and Management

Constant and consistent moisturizing and hydration throughout the day will keep the flare ups at bay even when exposed to triggers. Remember, a flare up occurs when the skin’s protective barrier is stripped away due to a lack of moisture. Educate, then encourage your child to moisturise as often as possible to maintain that protective barrier of moisture over their delicate skin. It is also imperative that your child learns how to manage the itch without scratching at the patches because scratching causes the skin to break and blister, leading to more skin damage and therefore slows down the overall healing process. If your eczema-prone child also suffers from food allergies, you may want to identify and take note of the foods that trigger a flare up, if any. And then have a chat with your child’s doctor on the appropriate dietary restrictions before you proceed to cut out any of these foods from his or her diet. We now know that the environment plays an important role in determining the incidence of a flare up. Air pollutants, materials such as wool and man-made fibres, chemicals and parabens found in soap and shampoo and even fragrances in some products can cause a flare up especially in people with sensitive skin. Hence, it is essential to consider soap-free formula in skin care products in the overall management of eczema. Eczema in young children can prove to be quite a challenge since they are not able to properly manage their own skin given their age. So, if you are a concerned parent looking for a non-steroid based treatment for your child, the good folks at Suu Balm™ may just have what you need.
