Whole(listic) Brain Training

Wednesday, 27.12.2017

Out with the old, and in with the new! Memorisation for the sake of it is a waste of your child’s potential – they should be able to understand and apply their information appropriately. Empower your child with abilities that allow them to make the most of the knowledge that they’ve gained.

How would you define “Intelligence”? A collective amalgamation of people's wisdom on a free platform that acts as a repository for our knowledge; done by the people, for the people (i.e. Wikipedia) has stated that Intelligence is: “one’s capacity for logic, understanding, self-awareness, learning… More generally described as the ability to perceive information, and to retain it as knowledge to be applied towards adaptive behaviours within an environment or context”.

Therefore, it is important that even from a young age, we begin to enable our children’s ability to not only retain information, but to apply information in a manner that will benefit them – Stamford Education’s Whole Brain Training with an emphasis on English or Mathematics helps children achieve outcomes that Brain Training or English and Math enrichment alone cannot generate.

The labels of being a right-brainer or a left-brainer have long since been used to help children discover their strengths and weaknesses, but they actually place limits on children by giving a somewhat static route to follow. Science requires creativity, and creativity requires science! Our brain is an incredibly complex biological wonder, and simply training one side is wasting potential on the whole.

An Expert’s Opinion, Backed By Neuroscience
Patricia Kuhl is a Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences specialising in language acquisition and the neural bases of language – with a greater focus on how we absorb language as babies. She was able to safely recorded a 6-month old baby’s (Emma) magnetic fields that changed as she did thinking using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Through listening to words in her parents native language, the auditory areas in Emma’s brain lit up, followed by the surrounding areas which their team believes to be related to coherence and logic.

The Golden Age Period of learning for our children is determined to be between 18 months to 6 years, and those years are ideal for them to not only develop their social, intellectual, emotional, and physical areas, but also cognitive growth!

It would make sense that a teaching method that engages the entire brain is the most beneficial and efficient method. This is where the concept of Whole Brain Training comes in, as it seeks to equip children with skills that they will need and use for life. Children need to be engaged and have their interests ignited – they absorb the fastest when they find learning fun and interesting!

Why Stamford Education?
They believe that the groundwork for literacy and numeracy can be laid with no homework, no revision, and no stress. The first journeys that our children embark on inevitably involve preschool education – in the past, preschool constituted of only childcare or kindergarten, but now, preschool children are no longer exempt from enrichment classes.

Academic expectations for pre-schoolers are increasing, and many parents feel like they are forced to choose between giving their children a great foundation (through weekends packed with preschool enrichment classes) and a happy childhood that involves only play and learning through play. I ask you this though – why not both?

At Stamford, they believe that children between 18 months and 6 years have an exceptional ability to learn new skills and develop core cognitive abilities. So preschool education done right can help children build strong foundations in literacy and math, and would increase the valuable and limited amount of time that you can spend together with your children.

Why Whole Brain Training Works
Whole Brain Training utilises the five rules of how the brain learns – sight, speaking, hearing, doing, and feeling. Using these core concepts, Stamford improves on them, teaching your children valuable skills including Language, Numeracy, General Knowledge, Motor Skills and Character Development

This results in well-rounded thinkers and achievers with Life-Defining Abilities such as: sustained attention, quick processing of information, creativity, flexibility, receiving, storing, and recovering information, mental visualisation of concepts, pattern recognition, and many more abilities. Stamford Education believes that every child who studies there and gains those Life-Defining Abilities will become an advocate for their values of Read-Think-Solve

We, as parents, always want the best for our children, and if you feel that your child deserves the holistic preschool education that Stamford Education provides, sign them up for classes! Stamford has schools throughout Singapore, from Bugis, Marine Parade, Orchard, Punggol, Sengkang, to Toa Payoh. Stamford Education specialises in Whole Brain childcare and classes that include modules covering Whole Brain English, Math, Mandarin, and Global Citizenship.
